I watch the wind whip through the trees as the ‘feels like’ temperature dips to -23C. Dog walks are quick 15-minute bursts, and my social calendar reflects the post-Christmas lull.
This is perfect making weather!
This month I am making all the cozies – another Musselburgh hat, several socks, a puff quilt, and a half-zip sweater. There are big things in my queue – has anyone else fallen in love with CatKnit Pullover by Andrea Rangel? Who’s thinking of sewing up a pair of trousers?
I’ve also been looking back over 2024, and planning events that will make 2025 even better for Knit Sew Well. What I learned last year is that makers want to do things together. The social stitching events that we hosted were always well-attended. My collaboration with Pastime Pieces introduced me to sewists who have taken me under their wing. And folks want to know how to make things. They want to try new techniques and expand their horizons.
This makes me excited for the series of workshops and making events that I’m going to roll out in the next few months. Workshops will be either project-based or technique-based, and limited to six/ 10 registrants. Some will be for a fee, while other workshops will be drop-in, social events.
So let’s get things started with:
Learn to knit a Musselburgh Hat
The Musselburgh hat is perfect for those who have already knit a hat in the round and are ready for a more challenging project. It is written for multiple gauges, so you can start knitting the hat with whichever needle size feels comfortable for your knitting style and the yarn you’re using. This hat can be knit on four DPNs, two circular needles, or magic loop. I will have examples of each technique on hand. We will work on cast-on techniques, increases and decreases, and techniques for determining if you have the right tension for your yarn choice.
When: Saturday, Feb. 1, 10 AM – noon
Where: 259 Talbot St. E Blenheim
Cost: $15 – fee is waived if you buy your yarn from www.knitsewwell.ca
Materials needed: heavy lace-weight to DK-weight yarn, up to 600m/700 yds and your choice of needles.
You will need to purchase and print off the pattern on your own. The pattern is available at https://ysolda.com/collections/hats, or on Ravelry (search Ysolda or Musselburgh).

Let’s Talk About Socks
Knitting socks is such a satisfying project, and the techniques are endless. In this workshop we’ll look at sock-knitting from all angles, starting with yarn selection and needle configuration. We’ll discuss the difference between toe-up and top-down, and even consider the afterthought heel. This workshop is designed for those who already know the basics of knitting socks and want to expand their repertoire. There will be plenty of opportunity to work on your own sock project during and after the workshop.
When: Saturday, Feb. 22, 1 PM – 3 PM
Where: Bayside Brewing Co., 970 Ross Lane, Erieau
Cost: $15 – fee is waived if you buy your yarn from www.knitsewwell.ca
Materials needed: Bring your own sock project. I will have yarn and needles from the Knit Sew Well store for purchase.
